Trans knock????

i have a 1979 olds cutlass, with some 163,000 miles, 305 ci, th 350 trans, it just developed a knock today thats driving me crazy. It sounds like when a catalytic converter goes bad you know the tumbling marbles. Exept i dont have a catalytic. It sounds like its coming from the trans. Checked the brakes cause i just did them, they seem fine. Put the car on jackstands and the u joints seem good. The car only does it in drive under load (poking the throttle) it idles down the street but once i give a little gas it makes the soft knocking noise. I also gave it the brake and gas like your trying to smoke the tires happens then too, but never in park....does that rule out anything with the motor? I had a car whose fly wheel was cracked it sounded alot worse than my olds, maybe my converter?, im pretty stumped. Any help would be great, i'd like an idea what to look for before i tear everything down.

there a dozens of things that could be going on there

I would check for
loose converter bolts/nuts
loose flywheel
loose transmission and or mounts
loose starter

something that sounds like a light knocking while going up the road can be alot louder than you think for the road noise

that should keep you occupied for a minute or two

hope this helps

I had a cracked flex plate one time, sounded like what you are describing. Also pinging will do EXACTALLY what you are describing too. Check your timing, its an easy one to check.
