in short,No,it won't work. The PCM you will need to run the 97 engine, also, runs the trans. The PCM is gonna be lookin for input from an electronically controlled trans. You 87 trans is not.As far as the rearend,it should be fine.

No the 4 cylinder and the 60 degree V6's use a unique trans that both is lighter duty and uses a different bolt pattern from that of the 90 degree V6 and V8 engines. The 90 degree V6 (4.3) and the 305 and 350 share a lot of common internals, case, bolt patterns and shifting schedule such that they swap across these "smaller" 90 degree engines pretty easily.

Check the rear axle the I4 and 60 degree V6 tend to use a 7.5 inch ring in a 10 bolt. These are iffy behind a bigger motor.

The 97 is an OBD II system it is not compatible with the OBD I of your 87. You will find yourself ears deep in bringing the system wide elements of the OBD II into the 87, this is no small task. The other choice would be to scrap the existing OBD I and go with a carb and HEI. In this case you'd need a 700R4 for an automatic. Manuals are somewhat simpler but they still talk with the computer as do automatics. The 700R4/4L60 transitions to 4L60E from 93/94. It's up not a clean cut change you have to look at things in this period. The 700R4/4L60 will only send speed data to the computer so the wire bundle is small. The 4L60E and 4L65E are completely computer controlled with a wire bundle that has an impressive size going into it.

Does the vehicle need to be inspected for emissions where you are? If not, use a carbed intake w/the carb of your choice, a HEI distributor, and a TH350 or 700R4 trans or a manual like a Muncie, T-10 or T-5, etc. If the rear gear ratio is low (high numerically) unless you are going to change the rear end (or can put up w/the high cruise rpm), you'll want a trans w/OD.

The LF6 4.3L V6 in '97 made 175 to 180 hp @ 4400 RPM and 240 ft/lb @ 2800 RPM. The L35 made a little more (180 to 190hp/245 to 250 tq). 2wd made a little less than 4wd according to some sources.

The L35 4.3 in the 1996+ fullsize GM trucks was rated at 200hp@4600rpm and 260 lb/ft torque.

I had a 1992 reg cab shortbox 2wd 3.08 gear 700r4 trans TBI 350 truck which was rated at 200hp/300lb/ft torque.

My gfriend then bought a 1997 reg cab shortbox 2wd 3.08 rear geared, 4l60e trans(same ratios a 700r4) with its 200hp/260 lb/ft torque.

We would run the 1/4 mile and I would get the holeshot, but by the end of the 1/4, the L35's better upper rpm breathing and lighter weight, she would consistently beat me.
Pretty close comparison between trucks as well.

If I were you, I'd take your 4.3 V6 L35 and swap it along with a 4l60e into your S10. Use a 1996/97 blackbox PCM and you wont run into any VATS issues that the 98-99 fullisze trucks did.

I'm wondering if you could run a 1990-92 4l60 which is a 700r4 without electronic control. Some of these transmissions used an electric speedo output. Then you could calibrate the 4.3 blackbox PCM with a manual trans calibration so that the 4.3 would run just fine in front of the auto.
VIA PCM tuning you can shut off all the EGR/AIR emissions devices if you wish.
