I will be installing my 1st. automatic OD trans. Question is =which one is better - takes more abuse & which is lower in costs to rebuild?? 700R4 or the 200-4R---?? Any years better than others? This will be iused for a 383 chev & in a van - so towing is to be considered also.Early van that had a powerglide in it.
both are kinda iffy in stock form, both need to be rebuilt with different parts to hold up to decent hp, the 86-93 700r4's are a bit better than the later 4l60e's and the stock 2004r's use stamped sheet metal drums so they are one of the biggest weak points in them, if kind of a toss up really.
both cost about the same to rebuild to take say 350-400hp
the 700 has a very low first gear, useless with rear gears like 3.73/3.90/4.11/ unless in a truck that has tall tires.. car tires in the 26-27" tall. it becomes a very short 1st gear.. and the jump to 2nd is a biggie..
the 2004r the gear spacing is better.. better o/d gear %
the 2004r if replacing a th350(short tail) is almost a bolt in..
you have to move the crossmember back some,, but you use the th350 drive shaft..
the 700r4 will require a shortened shaft..
both require the t.v. cable and correct bracket on the intake
i just did the 200 4r in my 1977 concours nova hatchback. read all about the two hundred on the net, built it myself works great. use one from a 86 on up because they do have some of the better parts. it was so much fun that i built a second one. If you build a 200, don't drill out the plate, just use the bilgger valves for more presure. put in the extra clutches and ilt should do you good
