Transmission shelf life

Well, my 700 project is still sitting in the store room waiting to get finished. I got busy at work and had to pack it up and make some money. It's been on the shelf now for 11 months. I built it with lots of vasoline and atf. All that is left is the VB. What is the normal shelf life of a tranny? LOL

Trans shelf life

You built it wet, so I would imagine that, along with your low relative humidity in Phoenix, you could let it sit for quite a while longer.

I built a th350 for a guy about 4 years ago, he had it sitting in his garage.

Last year he noticed some rust forming on the input shaft, so he brought it back for me to check, after 4 years he was ready to complete his project.

There was about a half an inch of water in the trans pan.

Seems his 8 year old son got a little careless when he was washing his bike.

Anyway, we took the trans completely apart.

We had also built it wet, where the water did not get to, everything was fine, so I suppose one can deduce that, under the right conditions,[ no renegade 8 year olds ], your trans will be just fine .

Thanks. It's bagged good and clean and in a dry closed storeroom. Just thinking that "someday" I'll get the urge to finish it off and install it. Just need to finish the VB and buy a converter. Got everything else done and ready. (sigh!!) so much to do, so little drive. (getting old sucks!)

I doubt the warranty will be valid.

Well I just came across this post and thought I'd share my story. We had a 700r built for our project car. It sat for about 2 years before we started driving the car. The guy who built the trans told us to let him know when we started driving it and he would start the warranty. Very cool . And his trans build.............awesome it'll snap your neck under hard acceleration...........which I never do........... . Seeya Brian

since Jmark built his own tranny he will have to answer the warranty phone calls.

My old Tranny builder built me a spare just in case he was not able to build me another one when needed. He does not seem to think extended storage is a problem as long as all the openings are well sealed against the critters that like to crawl into small orifi and build their nest/lay their eggs. I have every thing plugged or taped over and am confident the tranny will be ready when I need it.

10-4 on that, I am a fleet mechanic for fed ex. We have had some of our GMC vans totaled in the past. We had recently changed the transmissons. We drug the vans in the shop and pulled the transmissions out and stored them. I sealed all of the orifices with plastic plugs and caps. I also wrapped the tail shaft with shrink wrap to seal it. They have sat up to a year before we used them. We serviced the filters and put them back in servce and have had no problems. It's hard to let 2000$ transmissions go to the crusher!!! See ya Brian
