trans shifting?

87 GMC S-15, 700 R trans. While driving 50/60 mph. I suddenly noticed eng RPM's high. To my dismay trans wasn't shifting up into 3rd or 4th/OD. Manually & in drive it shifts up through 2nd & sometimes 3rd. But ,in 3rd only it stays in,up to a higher RPM 2500-3500 +-, than kicks out like into nutral. I can start over from 1st,ect & repeat the same thing. Fluid is a little burnt but not low or ugly smelling or looking. I've had the plesure of burn fluid nose bite. remember? Eng is a 2.8. Veh has 107000 miles on it. very clean inside & out. ( I know, put my full size blazer 305 & 700 R eng in it!) Any thoughts? Chuck,

sounds like typical 3-4 clutch failure in the 700 trans.

a rebuild is in sight for this unit.

700R4 build

Been in your shoes, the 3-4 clutch pack is toast. When you rebuild it you might want to check out this ebay store.Oregon Transmission, get the Red Eagle Masterkit and a Transgo reprograming kit his prices are great! I used him and was very satisfied.Be sure and get the TV cable shop adjusted with a gauge 700's can destruct fast if TV is wrong.

While I have used the Alto Red clutches with success in other units, those in the know don't use them in the 700-R4 for the 3-4 pack.
Crosley being one with lots of practice...

The Raybestos Z-pack is recommended and a few builders talk highly of the stock Borg Warner Hi-Energy in an 8 count pack with thick steels.

I've used the Z-pack but haven't tried the Hi-Energy in anything other than the stock configuration. Most of my 700 builds are not for extreme performance use.

Red Eagle Clutches

Since the Red Eagle clutch pack has more clutches than other brands it is critical that the clearances be changed, the folks at Oregon Trans. put a big note in with my order alerting me to this, also when building a 700r4 don't forget "The Beast" .

I would bet Crosley has tried different clearances.

I am told the Z pak is discontinued at the moment.... a re-engineering is happening.

Red Alto with standard steel plates works well. Scuff the steel up with a 3M pad or similar.

I like the hi-energy plates.
