Trans temp gage grounding issue

I installed a B & M trans temp gage in my 72 Chevelle. Its located on the return steel line from the cooler back to the trans. I wired it per the instructions, Switched Power, Sensor and a wire to eluminte the light. The gage works fine (minus the back light) until I land the ground wire on the gage. Once I do that, the back light eluminates and the temp gage drops down to zero.
Would anyone have any suggestions?

The body of the light socket
which is grounded is touching the terminal that goes to the sensor thus grounding the gauge sensor terminal causing the gauge to go to 0.
