IVE JUST RECENTLY PICKE UP A 51 MERC ITS BEEN COVERTED FROM STANDERD TO AUTOMATIC . THIS IS MY FIRST MERC AND
FOR SOME REASON I COULDNT FIND WHERE TO CHECK MY TRANS FLUID OR WHERE TO ADD IT ANY HELP WOULD BE GREAT THANKS |

your right im new thank you for your reply adtkart I really dont know what trans I think it was done years ago and th find where to check it ere doesnt seem to have a dipstick It might be gone and thats why I cant thanks anyway Ill keep looking

Do you have any idea what year the trans came from, as in newer or possibly the same period of the vehicle? Can you check the shape of the trans pan to help identify the trans? Is it the original engine in it? Just trying to get some info to go by. Also check at the trans on the front near the bellhousing. You should see where the tube runs from or to.

That must be one OLD auto trans! The only one I can think of that would have a location as you describe would be the original GM Hydramatic. I know Ford bought some for Lincons, but don't think they used them anywhere else until they came out with their own auto (actually a joint venture with Studebaker and Borg Warner) in the mid 50s (about 1954). I've messed with some of the late 50s models and they all had regular dip sticks, but it's possible the first ones didn't.
