transmission

I have a '87 Olds Cutlass Salon with a 307 Olds engine. Originally it came with a 200 4-R. I was looking to get more power out of it. Should I switch to the 700 R-4 or beef up my 200 4-R? I'm trying to avoid switching engines. If u have any suggestions feel free to respond. Thank You!

307 is not a very powerfull motor and hate to say-will never be. you could do some modes to make it a nice street runner, but track runner no. In the future you could swap an olds 350 (bolt in) or 455 (min fabrication) and get some nice power.

the 200 4r tranny will hold up to a moded 307. you could have it rebuild with a nice shift kit and upgrade the converter for better times and smokey burn outs, the 700 r4 is just as reliable as the 200 4r. i have both, and i preffer the 2004r for the gearing.

Thanks for the info. I'm just trying to gain street performance at a low cost. I understand that the 307 is sluggish. What can i do to make the 307 better? Thanks for your time!

A 700 won't bolt up to an Olds engine, only a Chevy.
