Transmission choice for a 62 Cadillac

I was wondering if there is a formula/guide to choosing a new transmission for cars. Or if anyone knows of a tranny that would fit a 62 Cadillac with no modification? It's a 390v8 with I think (not positive) stock 325hp. I remember reading that in one of the manuals- but I am not sure.

But the transmission that is in it now keeps slipping, does not shift well and leaks to no end. I want to put a more modern transmission into it for the sake of efficient shifting. I have no intention of selling the car-so all original is not important to me. I will of course keep the old one, but prefer to put a new one in. Any suggestions? thanks
