Transmission, Converter or ?

I went for a ride with the 69 this afternoon and came back home with it on a flat bed truck.

The car stopped to accelerate when I shifted (under hard acceleration) from 1st to 2nd or 2nd to 3rd (TH-350), I don't really remember on which shift it happened. The transmission was running fine before this.

The engine seem to be running fine except that it seems to be loaded a bit. Nothing happens when I move the transmission lever, no forward no reverse.

I will remove the bell housing cover to verify if the flexplate & stall converter are spinning.

My neighbour, was telling me that it could be that the Stall Converter broke.

The question I have is do they break and what are symptoms when I does?

Something to do for winter!

Thanks, Daniel.

Based on the info, sounds to be broken trans pump gears. A pressure check can head you in the right direction. Passenger side at rear.

If the Torque Converter is shot, I will still have a pressure ready?

If the Torque Converter is shot, can I only replace it, or do I also need to get the tranny rebuilt?

Thanks, Daniel.

Kinda cryptic. I think I understand.

The torque converter has nothing to do with pump pressure unless the snout is sheared off or something. (the TC snout drives the pump inner gear)

A pressure check is one of the first things to diagnose a problem with an auto trans...

Hi C-10,

I'm going to verify the pressure on the weekend.

What pressure should I expect with the car in park and the engine running between 750 to 1000 rpm?

Thanks, Daniel.

Park/neutral - 55-75 psi
Low and D2 - 85-110
Drive - 60-90
Reverse - 85-150

1000 rpm brakes applied.

Spring arrived yesterday and I got the 1st gen bug, I getting ready to take it out, especially that the 2010 are about to come out I cannot be Camaro less.

I finally took the the time to hock-up a gauge on the transmission side port this afternoon.

I have 60psi in neutral and more when I put in in speed. I can now conclude that the transmission front pump is good and that its my Torque Convertor that is defective.

It now time to shop for a replacement Torque Convertor...
What would you recommend (Make, Model and RPM), I have a TH-350, 3.73 Gears and 26.1" tires?

Is it Ok to replace the torque without rebuilding the transmission? I will of course change the tranny oil.

Thanks, Daniel.

It sounds like you broke the sprag in the converter. When you pull it apart remove the converter from the trans then reach with your finger down in the hub of the converter and you'll feel a splined portion and try to rurn it both clockwise and counterclickwise. It should only turn in one direction if it does turn both ways the sprag is bad. This indicative of to much power and not enough sprag. Buy or have this converter rebuilt with a mechanical diode or what is called a spragless converter and eliminate any further trouble. Good Luck!
