Transmission ID 700r4

The code on the side of the trans is MD8 and a 6 with a line under it.
There is a 7 digit number on the other side.
8663549
I looked where everyone said the other code was located but it wasn't there.

Any help telling what year transmission I have.

I'm not totally sure if this is going to help you at all, but I found this when I was looking for my 700 and thought I'd throw it up here.

The only thing your information tells me is that this transmission is 87 to 91, but possibly to end of production.

Without the numbers on the pan rail, it is hard, if not impossible, to be any more specific.

I couldn't find any numbers on by the pan. I was told it was a later model transmission but wanted to see if I could id it before I dropped it off.
I will know tonight when I drop it off to get it rebuilt.

Thanks

If it is an 86 model, it was a very late production 86 as that case was first made in late 86 for 87 models.

The builder looked at the numbers on the front pump and told me it was an 86, I couldn't find the number on the side of the case that told what year it was but his shop was full.

Date on the front pump is a casting date and can be YEARS before actual production use though in most cases is only about 4 months prior to use. The pump body where the number is can be used for auxilliary and non-auxilliary applications, so could even be used before 86 if someone want to use it.

The stator support (back part of pump) cannot be used in prior applications.

Your transmission has an auxilliary valve body which was not used before very late 1986. That case will not work for a non-auxilliary application meaning that it cannot be used in earlier applications.

Most solenoids in most transmissions have a date stamped on them. I don't know whether the 700 solenoid has a stamped number or not. It does have a partial part number cast into the plastic, but that does not tell us the year.

Assuming that is the original pump body, your transmission is most likely 1987. Short of getting the build code, anything else is an educated guess.

is there a single casting line that arches over the area where the two cooler line fittings are on the transmission case?

if so then its a 1987 up

there are small stamped in code digits on a small flat spot right above pan rail somewhere

OR on a small flat spot around bellhousing area one side or the other of the trans case

or also possibly but unlikely at near the trans rear mounting pad
but this was really actually only on most 4L60E trannies though

and if it has electronic small style VSS speedo then its a 1991 up

MD8 is simply the general RPO code for 4 speed auto trans

and the casting code starting with 8 is a VERY general trans case casting code

which is useless as well and used on lots of years of 700's

There is a casting line like you described.
