Unhappy Transmission not shifting

First time on, I have a 85 GMC 3/4, Surburban 2wd, auto. Not had problem until flywheel starting breaking off teeth and grinding and now not shifting properly, unknown if related. I have replaced the starter to no avail and now I have to replace the flywheel. I am afaraid that the trans will need to be replaced? I have not serviced it as of yet, it does not want to shift into the higher gears even after warming up. I am asuming that it is a th350 or 400. Can anyone suggest what the problem may be and or solution. Roger

could be as simple as a vacumn line off at the trany or under the hood, is modulator on side or in the back of trany? eather one requires vacumn to shift unless you realy wind the engine up. check lines. good luck.
