Transmission oil cooler location

What about putting the trans oil cooler under the vehicle? I know some have done it, but what about gravel, other things hitting it? I have very little room for a cooler under the hood, and the radiator has no oil cooler in it.
Where would be the best place for it? Would you do it or not? Thanks.
