Transmission/Rearend Combo Question

Hey guys,

I have a 67 Camaro with a small journal 327 and need some advice on rearend gears ratios. I rebuilt my engine with a voodoo 262 cam, and have a freshly rebuilt m22 going behind it. The problem (maybe) is that my rearend has the stock 3.08 gears. Is it going to be a dog? I won't be racing it, and will mostly only drive it around town, with maybe a trip up to my family's cabin in the mountains once and a while. Should I change to a lower gear like a 3.55 or 3.73, or should I just leave it alone. I want the car to have some balls when it needs it. You don't build a muscle car and aim for low performance you know?

Any info would be great!

In the 70's, I had a 66 Mustang Fastback with 289, headers, Torker intake, 600 Holley, T-10 and 2.80 gears with 26" tires and it ran a 15 flat in the 1/4 and got 21 running 70 but with a nearly stock cam. In town it wasn't hard on the clutch since the car was only 3050 and I liked being able to cruise faster than 70 and did that a lot. A 3.50 gear would have been nicer for the light to light stomps but didn't do that a whole lot anyways. How does your car act with the 3.08? If you don't have it running yet, give it a shot and see how it does. In the 1/4, you might like how it chases down the competition on the top end...

Good point. I don't have it running yet, but should in the next few weeks. The rearend is in good shape, doesn't leak and no issues with the gears. I, too, will not be dragging it from light to light. My engine is boared 60 over, flat head pistons, 194 camel hump heads (ported and polished), performer intake, voodoo 262 cam, and a performer carb...which is all the power I'm looking for. Perhaps I'll put it together, drive it, and change the gears if it's not a good fit. Are they pretty straight forward to swap out?
