Transmission Swap

My brothers 1997 V-6 GMC's 5 speed standard transmission just went out on him and we are told these particular 5 speeds are known to be pretty bad for this.
A rebuilt 5 speed runs over $1000 so we would rather invest in something a little more reliable.
I have been told that an automatic 4L80E will bolt right up to the same bell housing the 5 speed was bolted to. I was also told that the existing wiring harness in his truck would have a connection to activate the lock-up converter on the 4L80E with no problems.
Does anyone know if this information is correct and if it is;
How do I locate the converter lock up connection?
Is the spline count on the 5 speed tail shaft the same as that on a 4L80E?
Any help appreciated!

Thanks
Rex

Re: Transmission Swap

your information is Incorrect.

The 4L80E will bolt up to the bell housing but........The 4L80E requires full computer control for pressure and shifting. your GMC truck with a manual tranny will NOT be set up for this control.

A 4L60E tranny will bolt in, but it ALSO is fully computer controlled which ( again ) your truck is NOT setup for. The drive shaft yoke spline is the same count, the 4L80E is NOT

Sorry to have the bad news for you.

A non electronic 700r4 would bolt in. There is NO hookup for the lockup in your OEM truck wires though. Easy to do with a kit or some quality help with OE parts.

The cost would be similar to the rebuild of the 5 spedd manual I would think.
