Have no heard of any grenading if that is what you are asking.

I have an old TKO II in my 59 Elky and like it enough that I bought
a 600 for the 66 Elky.

I don't hammer my cars at all---so I have had no issues with either trans

Some people love them, some don't like them. Almost always its the way you have to shift the trans in and out of 2nd gear.
Re: durability, if its a street car, with a sane amount of horsepower, there probably won't a problem.
I have had customers who complained about noise issues, but since noise is subjective, I can't comment.
My best advice is before you drop a chunk of cash, try to drive a car with a TKO. If you like it, buy it. If not, be glad you saved your money.

Good point about the shifting.
They shift nothing like a shifter with rods.

The trans in the 59 whines a bit in 3rd, but all the rest of the gears are quiet
I have not yet got the 66 running yet.

Takes a while to get used to the shifting, but once you have it, they shift pretty nice.

I currently drive cars/pick-ups that have both types of shifters,
internal rail and external rods-----big time difference in shifting manners.

I have a 600 in my 60 Vette. I like the way it shifts, nice tight shift pattern. That might be a personal preference.

I grew up in SE Idaho------that is why I am now in warmer climates
