Hey guys what do u think of this combo? It seems like a great bang for the buck, but the price also seems too good to be true??? For 6500, seems very cheap. Considering a shafiroff 427 sbc is 9000 to 10,000!

What do you guys think?

The brand of pistons and rods aren't mentioned. That needs to be researched.

one thing about a shafiroff engine is it is what he says.It will perform as advertised.My friend John Graham in Calgary bought a 9.90 motor from him and it never had any problems.Standard freshen ups after 2 seasons(or less) depending on the activity.John doesnt just compete,he has been track champion several times and always places. That of course is more driving than engine,but you need reliability and consistency.

What I would do is;
price out the parts listed for the build and consider if you would use the same parts if you built the engine yourself.Then see how much profit the builder is making.
Do not consider the discount he might get because it does not apply to you.If you can replicate all the parts and have the engine machined a lot cheaper and you feel you have the experience to assemble the engine as well then you will have 2 choices
factor in when you will get the engine.and see if there is any warranty? Not selling Shaf engines,but he will sub out parts if you ask,usually to upgrade

another thing to consider(worry about) not all machine shops can machine a 427/434.They might try to talk you into a 420.The block should be C N C machined for clearance,not ground

i just received the info from them. The crank and rods are SCAT.

The pistons are forged (KB - Icon)

I have no problem w/that. They should state that clearly in the specs IMO.

2618 Forged Pistons

4340 Forged H-Beam Rods.

What I don't see is who makes them. Big difference in a part that's been fully inspected/backed by a reputable company and a generic imported part that carries an unknown or "off" brand. Not that Scat isn't imported (don't know if the raw castings/forgings are sent here for machining, or what), but they seem to do a better job than some of inspection and/or specifying/applying the spec tolerances.

so tri star engines 427 sbc (560 hp) $6,800 shipped.
shafiroff 427 sbc (525hp) $10,000 just over 10k shipped.

i have a hard time justifying buying shafiroff, it seems their prices are very very high.

that's not true.
a cnc machine does not know casting thicknesses so what difference does that make?
i recently did one, not on a cnc and also not hand ground. i do block clearancing all the time on a simple manual mill.

toast I did state that not all machine shops can clearance a 434.You are one of few.
A machinist can also make a mistake with a C N C machine.

C N C machines dont slip as often as people,they usually follow the program

sorry, didn't mean to snap if it sounded like i did.
i get so tired of hearing "cnc" as a buzzword that most don't even know what they do. yes they have a place in machining, but they are not the do all, end all, piece of equipment that some would have you believe.
I've always said a crap machinist can make junk on the nicest cnc, but a great machinist can make outstanding stuff even on worn out junk. it truly comes down to the person running the stuff.
