What years did the VW Bug have a split rear window?

I could agree with you if it was a totally separate brand by GM instead of a model of Chebbie. Your question said Mercury cars, not model.

Right, though I was thinking more American supplied which was 49-53 ( think, 49?) but yes around 38 until 53.

Point well taken; in my enthusiasm to post I overlooked that detail.

I still consider it a fascinating bit of trivia that FoMoCo would use a nameplate that had previously been associated with one of their chief competitors.
