When I worked for Ford I was told that the air box on the carbs wouldn't clear the hoods and the carbs were mounted backwards! I don't know if that's true or not? But that was the scuttle butt then!!!

I'm not quite sure. They had two hood configurations on the Thunderbolt but since the hoods were custom made or modified I find it hard to believe that they couldn't get the carbs to fit any way they wanted. Had to be some other reason. Possible air flow through the air box?

I hope you and yours are having a wonderful day!

I will let someone else post the next question. I won't lie to you I wasn't thinking backwards lol I just noticed in the picture the fuel lines came i on the passenger side and the throttle shafts connected on the driver side. Didn't even think about the choke being on the back.....Does that mean the whole carb was built differently? Because if you just spin a regular carb 180 degrees the fuel lines would be on the driver side and the throttle would work backwards?.....Or am I completely backwards now? You guys sure do make a man think too much I need some Tylenol

I just did a quick research on the subject and the thing that kept popping up wasn't sloshing but----( wait for it)------- distributor clearance! Makes sense, long Holleys! I did see sloshing mentioned but wouldn't you think that the carburetor manufacturer would have corrected that problem with the million of units it produced and why that car only?

Nice bit of persistant work and deductive reasoning, and you can totally see it when you look closely at the pic of the engine.

It may have been interesting to be a fly on the wall on the day that someone figured out that the carbs wouldn't fit "as-is". Ooops!

Edelbrock #7505 says that it works with Edelbrock carbs ONLY.

I think they did correct it --slosh tubes ,since these are front hung floats not side hung it could have some thing to so with it OR as you said probbaly clearance, also after going back to pictures look at bowl bolts 5/16 heads should be large flat blade screwdriver heads in 1964 , these are probally replacement carburators ,might not make any difference though appear to be newer 600 holleys

Let me toss out a quick one. Try to figure it out without looking it up first.
What do these have in common?
Fish
Tillotson
Amal
Marvel

You got it Amigo! Fish was the one that I didn't know. I got to work on Amal's years ago on my friend's 1/4 midget. His dad showed me a few things. You'll love this Brian, he was a Rambler mechanic.

The Fish is the mysterious "100 mpg" carburetor. It's pretty interesting the fuel enters thru holes in the throttle shaft.
