I usually lurk here because I am not good at thinking up the questions. Give me a minute and I will think of something.

Got it.

What american automobile engine ended up its life as an outboard boat motor?

You have my blessings to google this one.

There's a flathead 6 that comes to mind but I can't place what it came out of.

you guys are on the right track. This engine was used by an outboard boat engine manufacturer after it was no longer being used as an automobile engine.

As far as I know, all the Continental engines were inboards. Not what I am looking for but they were indeed used in all kinds of things.

Side note: I had a friend years ago who only built 2 kinds of engines. Flathead Fords for fun and flathead continentals for profit.

Ok he'res another. After Crosley went out of business the engine rights were sold to a outfit called AeroJet and the engine was used as a inboard. They were around for a while and then sold the rights to a guy named Lou Fageol. He took the little Crosley and turned it into a 4 cyl outboard. Fageol went on later to devlope a inline 8 cyl engine comprised of two Crosley bolted tail to tail using one flywheel but it wasn't a outboard. Fageol sold his outboards to Sears and it was marketed under the name of Elgin. Later Fageol sold the rights to a guy named Crofton and he continued selling it as a Fageol/Crofton. Crofton later became Homelite.
So there you have it!
