It is named for the brothers Philander Higley and Francis Marion Roots of Connersville, Indiana, who first patented the basic design in 1860 as an air pump for use in blast furnaces and other industrial applications.

OK I finally got one! So here is my question: At the end of World War II in a joint effort between the English and American reconstruction efforts the Volkswagen motor company was reformed and production of the beetle was reinstated. So with all of that said which automotive giant turned down the opportunity to take over controlling interest because they said that the car was outdated, would never sell and would never be profitable?

It was Ford Motor Company! And can you believe it, until the beetle came along the Ford Model-T held the record for the most cars ever produced with more than 15 million Model T's manufactured between 1908 to 1927. The Beetle later passed that number on February 17, 1972 and the last one to roll off the assembly line on July 30, 2003, was the final original VW Beetle (No. 21,529,464) produced at Puebla, Mexico, some 65 years after its original launch, and an unprecedented 58-year production run since 1945, the year VW recognizes as the first year of non-Nazi funded production. Thats right more than 21 million were produced.

What is really ironic is that all Ford had to do was rebuild the war revenged assembly plant. No money for purchasing the company was required and they would have walked in with controlling interest. Small Wonder LOL.

Shane you have the floor.

And when they first discovered that they could be used on internal combustion engines to increase the performance, that is were the term, "Pour the Root to it" came from. LOL, LOL!
