Nitro Mix
WAY back when (when I was racing although NEVER in a fuel class!) - they used to measure % humidity, temperature, barometric pressure and a bunch of other stuff with an "amateur weather station" in the pits and mix the % alky to nitro as a custom blend before each run. (and NO, I have no idea what they used as guide to how much of each for each set of circumstances, but I watched them use a sling hygrometer, a big thermometer, a barometer and consult charts and then begin blending, and then check with a specifc gravity thingy to ensure that they had what the wanted to use for the next pass.
"Tipping the can" is adding a higher % nitro to the mix. If you got it wrong you were either underpowered or you blew it up Now NHRA has a max % rule, so no 100% nitro runs are allowed - and considering they are still getting 8,000 plus hp out of an engine limited to "only" 500 inches, I don't think to really need to tip the can all that much!

Huge explosion, but what was special about it that it was proclaimed a record.

You got it. Kinda roundabout but right. A picture taken of the explosion showed the blower way above the trackside light poles. Someone triangulated it in at 110 ' above the track surface. They didn't know if it was on it's way up or down. Hot Rod mag declared it the highest blower explosion ever.. Don't know if it has ever been bested. Your up. ![]() Edit- He came back and competed in the next round. |
