We started a trivia thread over at another forum and it has been a lot of fun.

Here are the ground rules. It starts with one question. The first reply with the right answer gets the floor for a new question. It continues like that unless, A) the person who has the floor doesn't ask a new question, or B) no one gets the correct answer. In that case, the person with the floor asks a new question. No more than one question on the floor at a time, and discussion/clarification is welcome until the floor is taken over by a new question.

See this thread for an example of how it goes: http://grassrootsmotorsports.com/forum/off-topic-discussion/trivia/1454/page1/

First question: In the 1952 Indy 500, what type of fuel was burned in the record-setting pole-position #28 car? Hint: it won pole position by a full 4 mph over the second-place Ferrari

"According to Von Dutch, the eyeball originated with the Macedonian and Egyptian cultures about 5000 years ago. It was a symbol "the eye in the sky knows all and sees all". Dutch modified it into the flying eyeball we know of today. He always believed in reincarnation, and the eyeball, somehow, was tied to his beliefs. There have been numerous copys of this design over the years. It still remains an icon of the '50s and '60s . Now they use his name for cheep crap like "Von Dutch Energy Drink" his real name was Kenny Howard , Its a shame that he died from alcoholism:(

I had a 67 Triumph (BIKE) he striped for me free, he used to do a lot of free stuff back then if you were parked near him, he would just say "can I stripe it" take out his sword brush and go!!!! I was lucky to have met him in San Diego when he was there!:D

It's interesting that Von Dutch came up. I was just watching a interview he did years ago, yesterday. He said that all the swooping designs came about to hide scratches. And the "Eye Balls"? They were to hide paint chips!

BB :thumbup::thumbup:

Everybody knows about his pin striping. But didga know?

Kenny Howards (Von Dutch) lifelong struggle with alcoholism led to major medical issues later in life. He died on September 19, 1992 from alcohol-related complications a loner with extreme paranoia who had alienated his friends and family!

"In 1958, Von Dutch designed and produced the "Mare's Leg", a cut-down Winchester rifle for the television series Wanted: Dead or Alive."

QUOTE"This is an extremely rare letter from the late world renowned artist and pin striper Von Dutch to fellow artist Gene Brown dated November 12, 1991.

Written from workshop near Santa Paula Airport where Dutch buddied around with actor Steve McQueen. This letter was mailed a short time prior to the death of Von Dutch. It expresses the philosophy of Dutch and his low regard for most people and religion with somewhat strong anti-Christian overtones.

This is a very rare Von Dutch item as he disliked writing letters and seldom communicated with anyone in his last years except in person. Brown had known Von Dutch since being introduced to him in 1959 by custom paint specialist Stanley Betz. Dutch often said he enjoyed the hand done Christmas cards that Brown sent to a select few every year."

"Gene!
In response to your letter and book. First off I have never read any books other than trade manuals-motorcycle engines or guns. I am not nor ever interested in people, only in what they make. When I was in business I gave them some courtesy and did not speak my mind. Now I have know reason to do that. So they get the truth and hopefully they go away. I also not use the telephone either anymore. I use people to make money or to lift heavy things for me. And would just as soon see everything covered in concrete. I don't like mud or keeping care of landscaping. I went through a lot of crap with my wife because I wanted sex. When my kids were in there teens I wasn't to go through all that ****. So I left them completely alone with any pain in the *** relatives. Religion, All of them are bull****! Happens the Christians are ****ing up the world the worst than the others. They are the only one with a healer so they capture sick people more.

So get off of me with it!

BYE,
Von Dutch" END QUOTE

Sign Painter

A close family member(late) was a free hand sign painter. Script, print, designs, you name it. After he was dead and gone(lived a long full life) a family friend told a story to me about him.

Seems he had hired him to paint his business logo, etc. on his shop front window.

He was very old fashioned, wore huge baggy pants and carryed his one shot enamel and thinner in baby food jars, along with brushes, etc. in his pockets.

He got set up on a pick board between two ladders, laid out a couple arcs and some hash marks with a wax pencil and proceeded to letter in the sign.

The family friend sat back and watched him, truly impressed with his talent. After just a few letters, he abruptly stopped and climbed down. He asked the business owner friend for an advance on the money, explaining that he needed to go get some wine because his hands were too shaky to paint.

Once he got back with his pint of wine, he began to paint again, taking an occasional swallow of his wine. Again the business owner was impressed by his free hand talent.

When the sign work was about 2/3's done, he abruptly stopped again and began cleaning his brushes and taking down the ladders. The friend told him that he would go get him some more wine if he wanted.

His reply was,"No Thanks, I'm gonna have to finish this tomorrow, I'm too drunk to paint now". LOL

True Story.... Thanks.....carry on Brian

He was my Grandfather

My Daddy(late)told me that PawPaw also painted cars and trucks a very long time ago. With fine enamels and the best brushes of the day, by hand! I remember Daddy painting an old Chevy with a brush when I was a kid. He ran out of black and painted the top dark blue(a mix of blue and the little black that was left). I told him it looked beautiful, he said, well it ain't as good as my Daddy's paint jobs, but not too bad.

Thanks for the memories.....

Good one! Here's a few cars that Von Dutch hand built and a knife. The Bubble car is not the one that Gene Windfield built for "Sleeper"but I very sure that Von Dutch built this one for Woody Allen's movie "Sleeper" I use to see this car parked at Von Dutch's place out in Calabases CA. ( West end of the San Fernando Valley close to a shop I use to work at.) At the same time Von Dutch was painting motorcycle tanks for Kolby Honda in Reseda, CA. Anything for a buck. At that time he was good pals with Steve McQueen. He was also painting tanks for "Bud" Ekins Triumph shop in Encino. Ekins was also great buddies with McQueen. Ekins was a motorcyle stunt man for the studios as well as owning his shop. He did the fence jump in "The Great Escape" for McQueen. McQueen also stared in the movie "The Reivers" which featured Von Dutch's "Winton Flyer"

He was what is known as a "character" and like him or not, characters are good to have around, otherwise we are a boring bunch.

Ok guys, what exactly does this rad support come from?

Nope it's not a Smithy's hammer nor is it for whacking knock-offs. Traditionally a brass or bronze hammer is used on wheel knock-offs. And as far as the witty retort from Dragonoake, "hitting" would be the improper terminology for what this tool is used for. That was hint #1.
