496, All of the 8N tractors from 1947-1952 were red body with gray sheetmetal unless someone had repainted it the wrong color (or possibly some industrial versions were gray, not sure on that). And all of the 8N tractors were four speed. The 9N and 2N were three speeds and were painted all gray. The 9N and 2N both had a very distinguishing feature from the 8N because the 9N and 2N had a brake on each side instead of both brakes on the right side like the 8N.
Its hard to remember after a few years but i had brakes on each side i think the other had both on same side like my present tractors all are John Deere now , also had 3 speed one no live pto had to put on rachet conn after trying to bushhog ,brakes will not stop it untill mower quit turning ,,thh best i can remember seats were different ,one metal no cover..
