truck bed

is it very hard to put patch panels on a truck bed

depends on what you're talking about...a fleetside, or a stepside.
Also depends which area you are planning on replacing.

I'd say a stepside patch would be really straight-forward, being that it's basically one piece of sheetmetal per side with stake pockets and the rail....but if you're a purist, you'd have to take into account the beads that are rolled into the bed-sides.

wheel wells should be incredibly easy. Depending on the size of the area you are replacing on the fleetside...and whether the damaged/rusted area crosses the body-line, it should be pretty straight-forward.

Why not look at picking up a bed from a junkyard? One could probably be had for cheap. Just a suggestion if it's only a 78.

Some of the Auto Trader mags around here have ads in them for truck beds in excellent shape for $800. Check some of the wrecking yards in your area. They usually go real reasonable.

Just made a truck bed for a 36 Ford pick-up. Sides bent, back bent, four side pockets bent, and I got to keep all the cuts(left over pieces) $200. Riveted them all together and paint. Customer is shickled titless
