dum dum hooked battery up wrong

84 c-10 hooked battery up wrong now my truck will start but will not turn off what do i need to do????

Probably smoked the diode tro and rectifier in the alternator. If I remember correctly this will cause a bleed-thru and keep the ignition energized. Have you checked the charging sysem?

X 2 what Greg said. I think he nailed it.
The easy thing to do to check this , is to completely disconnect the alternator then start the car, then shut it off, if it works fine , then replace the alternator.

Truck won't turn off....

Look I hooked up my battery wrong and arked out what I thought was my dido so I spent $100 bucks on a new alt.My truck will start but will not turn off unless I unhook the alt & batt.What switch do i need to replace?????or what do i need to look for,HELP........I'm sol right now.

The problem sounds like simply its not killing the power to the distributor when you shut the key off. Your gonna have to run some tests to find out why its not killing the power.

what make, what year,what engine?
What is a dido?
Do you mean the diodes inside the alt?

Could be backfeeding through the radio memory/power circuitry from a bad diode there. Did you even try unhooking the alternator and doing the test that was suggested before buying an alternator? It would have saved you 100 bucks.
Now that your wallet is lighter, maybe try unhooking the radio and trying it again.
