Trunk Latch

I have a '40 chev coupe that has power lifts which is operated electrically by the battery (when it's not gone dead and it's in the trunk). I've had too many times where the battery has gone dead or the lifts are very slow. Has anyone seen or replaced their trunk/handle latch with just an outside-key-sort of latch? My friend has one on his '48 Merc. coupe which is slick, but he has no idea where it came from. All he does is insert the key, turn it and the trunk unlocks....no power. Looks like a passenger door key latch of some sort (small disc shape). Would appreciate any info. on something like that.

Trunk latch

If you're looking for a REAL small key type of latch, check out the trunk latch on the 94-? Chrysler LHS/300's. The keyhole is no bigger than the main shaft of the key ( about 1/2 inch or slightly less if I remember right )But you could maybe make or adapt something like that. Maybe even fab up a small "holster"on the inside of the lid so that you could slide a regular GM trunk key cylinder asm. real tight against the inside of the lid . Then have a small hole in the decklid that the key would go through. That way all you would see would be the center of the key cylinder. Of course it would need to be sealed to the lid. Sorry if I didn't express myself clearer. Maybe one of you other guys understand better, and can provide a drawing?

i use an 00 mustang trunk latch on my truck
it has 3 means of unlatching itself; key on cable, hoffa release and electric release
i removed the key function and used bicycle brake cable and hardware to run the unlatch cable inside.
normal use is electric release w/ cable back up

though you could do the same thing with a small bearclaw and use bicycle cable to open it
