trying to decide

trying to decide on what steering box and column to use with a straight axle on my 58 checy truck? vega? any suggestions

I would NOT use a Vega ...
It is designed for a small, light car ... not a heavier truck.
When I had a 55 Chevrolet Cameo Pickup ( same chassis as your 58 ) I made a plate and used a late 60's Chevrolet Malibu power steering box.

Pretty simple really ..

You could use an early Nova box. Same size as a Vega but much less expensive and it can handle a heavier vehicle.
