I have a 70 Chevelle Malibu and it got scratched a couple weeks ago and I was thinking about changing it back to the original color (depending on what that is). I wanted to know if the data plate has a code that will tell me what that color was. It is cranberry red with black stripes now, but I am willing to go to the Autumn gold or cortez silver if they are original colors. If not I will just stick with the red. If anyone knows how to find this info without a build sheet I would be very thankful

The first letter of a two-letter paint code identifies the body color. The second letter identifies the roof color. (For example, the combination 51-50 on a Chevrolet would indicate the body finished in Dusk Blue and the roof area in Dover White.) General Motors paint code plate for all models except Corvair and Corvette is located under the hood at the top of the firewall on the left or right of the upper shroud. Hope this helps.
