I know they are both 55 to 65? chevy 3 speed transmission. They both have 4 bolt side covers and one is a 3 speed overdrive. does anyone know what the number mean or how to tell what they came out of and what they are worth?
T 85 used by Ford were stronger and the OD units were heavier also. A T 85 has a round botton on the side cover. The T 85 was re-engineered to make the T 10 4 speeds. Some parts interchenged between T 85's and T 10's , the synchros were the same, needle bearings, etc.
Gm used T 85's I don.t know if it was only in pickups.
im just trying to get a feel for what they are worth to as i have no use for them and would like to sell them , but not wanting to overprice them and try to rip someone off.
55-57 Chevrolet 3 speed with overdrive. Borg Warner OD R-10, trans is Muncie. Called 319 Muncie when it has the OD, 318 without. They are pretty light duty, and finding a floor shifter for one is almost impossible these days, but, I do have a NOS Ansen that will work with both the standard 3 speed and the OD trans. There are always a few on e-bay to give you an idea on price. The shorter 3 speed is for 58-64 "X" frame cars. Butch/junior stocker.
yeah i have tried looking at ebay but it seems everyone on there is overpricing there stuff with there $800 to $1500 range on the OD unit and its just sitting there not selling and i want these sold to someone that can use them and not just sit and collect dust
There might be Corvette or Tri-5 chevy guys looking for those too. Also, I think these are still used by some circle track guys, instead of the saginaw.
Based on information I have collected in the last 30 years, that appears to be about a 63 or 64 vintage transmission. And it is definitely a Muncie, not a Borg Warner.
If it is a 64 or 65, it COULD have 295-type gears instead of the 242/266-type gears that all other years have. None of the internals interchange between the two types although externally they are the same, so if it has 295-type gears, it is essentially worthless. No easy way to determine which is which either.
Beyond that, if it is not trashed inside, it will have some value to someone. Just got to find that someone.
That is out of a 55-56 vette. Because that's what the cast date says. And that's all I know.
