trying to start my 331

i have a 65 mustang that had a 289 in it, i just removed the motor and had a ford 331 stroker built by a very good shop, the motor has a 715cfm holley carb with manual choke and a holley 110 gph mechanical fuel pump and a stock distributor with a pertronix ignitor II under the cap.originally i couldnt get the car started after finally figuring out i should use the 5.0 h.o. firing order the motor started but just for a few seconds. i changed the oil ( it had a lot of fuel in it from trying to sart it for hours with the wrong firing order). i removed the #1 spark plug and put it at tdc on the compression stoke and then made sure my rotor pointed to the #1 spark plug. the motor cranks and cranks but wont start.. i played around with the distributor and after i keep it cranking over for about 5-10 sec. it starts but wont stay running.. i am at my wits end...ive rotated the disributor a hair at a time and still nothing.any help would be great.. thanks

Try a jumper from the battery (full 12-14VDC) to the red wire on the petronix harness, also make sure you have a good ground and that there is 0.030 gap between the pickup and the mag rotor of the ignitor.

http://www.pertronix.com/support/tips/default.aspx

Sometimes if the power is left on to these ignitors they can burn up so don't leave the power on when the dist is not spining.

If this is a flat tappet cam, all that grinding with the starter could have wiped off all the extreme pressure lube. Cams/lifters are lubed only with oil and vapors thrown off the crankshaft as the motor runs and what little bit drips off the bottom of the cylinder bores.

Did you install lighter springs for the cam break-in or did you just go ahead and install those Super Behemoth Head-Bender springs from the git-go?

Also check the voltage going into the coil to make sure you are getting 12+ volts,it's not uncommon for folks installing a Pertronix to forget to eliminate the factory ballast resistor there by decreasing the voltage the Pertronix unit needs to operate.

That is correct and was the reason for my suggestion on a trouble shoot with full volts.

Tom did youu check out the link I gave to the ignitor manual, your colors could differ, thing is you need a full voltage source, hook it up temporary and see if she lights, then wire it proper after, use the manual for other tips.

The cam issue well lets hope there is no issue
