Trying to understand timing and my problems

Ok this is my first post and I have been here quite a few times and seen the knowledgable people that help out and figured it would be my best bet. This is my first carb'd car, but im not new to cars really..just havent had any experience with distributors excpet for the opti on a LT1. I have an 84 camaro with a 400 sbc. I replaced the cam in it and ended up having to have somebody else come over to somewhat set the timing because of how fed up I was getting. There was no timing tab on the motor, though I do have one laying around in the garage, and I have no idea where on the timing cover to mount it because I've seen them in various places. When I attempted it, I found TDC by placing my finger over the number 1 spark plug hole and waiting for the compressed air to shoot out. I had trouble knowing exactly how to get the distributor to slide all of the way in with the oil pump gear and where and all of that. I really need to know how to instal the distributor from start to finish and how to adjust the timing. I have an older timing light. Im really just clueless to all of the timing. I also would like to know the difference in total timing and the other types. Ive been looking up on this first days and just dont really seem to understand a lot of the things iv came across and im just puzzled. Appreciate any help!

Edit: by the way, this is an HEI distributor
