tubo 400 help

i have a friend that broke a u-joint at about 113 miles per hour, it broke the bell housing off the tranny. anyway he bought another tranny from what was thought to be a reputal shop in alabama. the new 800 dollar tranny is a real pile of crap. so he ask me to swap all the old guts out of his "old" tranny that good but had the broken bell housing and put them into a doner case. ive got it all back together except for the pump. when i tighten up the pump the small shaft that sticks out stops turning by hand. im positive that i got all the clutchs to drop as i checked about 4 times for every clutch pack. i tried a smaller thrust washer that goes on the pump and it seems to help but it still gets really tight. any help would be apreciated! this is my fist time with a gm tranny. ive down about 5 727 trannys with good success!

It all starts with....

You can't get the front unit endplay correct until the rear endplay is right. Start back at the bottom of the case with that selective washer and get close to zero (somewhere actually around .010")
Then, keep it loaded and when you zero out the front it'll be perfect.

thanks for the reply, acually i went out in the shop today after work, read through the service manual a little more and it said that " if you cant turn the input shaft while pulling the pump into place then there is a forward clutch that didnt drop in". i tore it all back down and started over. when i got to the last clutch pack i noticed there was 5 clutchs, not 4 that i thought id seen last night. this time when i counted all five droping in the pump went in perfect, and i ended up with .007 end play. its all back together now so hopefully it will work!
