Question Tuning an Edelbrock carb..help I'm gaging!

I have a 600 CFM square bore carb on a pretty stock 350 Chevy with a manual choke. The motor starts right up and runs fine other than sometimes on a real hard right turn, the motor stumbles a little. The problem is, if I start this thing in the garage I can kill the whole family with the fumes!! I actually leave my garage door open for a while after I park in the garage to let out the fumes. Carbs are not my forte'..give me dirtbike carb and I'll struggle through it..an Edelbrock I figured I'd ask the experts!! Anyone have any tips or suggestions for websites??? Thanks HotRod

How is your idle mixture set? Use a vacuum gauge to set it correctly. Check your fuel level next and then replace the needle and seat if it is old and the float appears to be correctly set. You might want to see if the float is heavy if it is a phenolic type or shake it if it is a brass type.

That should get you started.

I set my idle mixture by feel, crank it in until it stumbles then back it out until it's smooth. The carb only has 3200 miles on it but I'm sure that the guy who put the carb on took it out of the box and there you have it.

Idle mixture may not be your problem. If you're running a healthy cam you may not have enough vacuum at idle to hold the metering rods down. Both Edelbrock and Carter sell spring sets for different idle vacuum conditions. If the metering rods aren't held down at idle the mixture will be pretty rich and will cause the gas odor you're talking about.

My cam is almost, if not exactly, stock. Your description sounds interesting though. Are there any adjustments that can be made to the idle circuit other than changing springs? I got onto the Edelbrock website and I am in the process of printing out their carb manual...if I don't run out of paper or printer cartrige first!

sounds to me its your float level if your float is set to high its flooding it out by what you decribed hard stops or cornering causes your problems maybe setting or bad float this is just my opinion almost bet.or could be sticking needle valve
