Tunnel Ram 454
okay..i bought a fresh built 454. stock heads and all. my question is what head should i run to boost power with running on pumped gas with a tunnel ram? im putting a good size cam in and over sized hooker super comp ceramic coated crome headers.i've been told the larger intake ports are the wrong move entirely. so im at a stopping point with my motor. i usually port and polish and gasket match everything. help me out tech gods! lol

The 781 or 049 open chamber oval port heads work very will on street strip 454's with porting and larger 2.19 x 1.88 valves.
Take a valve cover off and look for the casting number. |

How big is the cam? Because too big and the tranny will not shift right because of the vacuum modulator. Not to mention the gears you are running.
I hope they are 355 to 390 for the street. There is nothing wrong using oval port heads. What is the compression? What kind of 600 holley are they? |

the carbs im running are 600 cfm holly.nothing crazy. not double pumpers.and vacuum secondaries. im running a turbo 400. i dont want to but that what i got at the moment. i i guess my rearend is an 8.2.
Cam and Lifters, Hydraulic Flat Tappet, Advertised Duration 282/282, Lift .533/.533 is what im thinking of running.

Nothing wrong with the 600VS. Just change the diaphram top cover where you could connect a balance vacuum line between them for uniform secondary operation. Just hope you do not blow the rear.

(aftermarket) Ford 9, Dana 60, GM 12bolt and Ford 8.8 are all more than acceptable. Whichever one fits in your truck with the least work. Somewhere around a 3.89:1 - 4.11:1 rear gear.
You might want to run a Vacuum res if you're running a brake booster (or a hydroboost style unit) |

I ran that same spec cam in my '71 Camaro with a 11:1 CR 427, and tunnel ram with twin 600 cfm Holleys. Drove it both street and strip and it worked well for both. My heads were the old style 961 oval port small chamber with just some port matching and polishing. 3.73 gears.
Since I retired it from racing I went back to an old Edelbrock Torker intake with single 750cfm, and lowered the CR to 10:1, and gears to 3.42 for daily driving. |
