Turbo

Ok guys probably and odd one for this site, but thought I'd start here first. I'm looking at trading my quad for a 93 Mazda low rider pickup, now he told me its a mx6 motor with a turbo off a 16 valve cummins, he claims it has 20 pounds boost, and 300hp. Now I think 220 maybe more realistic, I'm more concerned on wether the internals could handle that. Has anyone had experience with this? Any input helpfull

In theroy, if you add 20 psi of boost to a 127hp engine then it should make 300hp. Not a big number and very possible.

The question is what is his doing for engine management? (fuel and ignition timing control) If you add more air with boost then the engine needs to get more fuel somehow and use less timing as the cylinder pressure goes up.

And a intercooler would be a must with 20 psi of boost.

I'm not experienced with mazda engines, but I know old 2.8 liter z engines will easily handle 400hp at the crank with boost.

Both the mx6 and ford probe gt had that engine turbocharged from the factory. I'm guessing he did the complete swap wiring, computer and all? I'm pretty sure that turbo is too big, It would take forever to get to 20lbs. That engine is pretty beefy and can handle 300hp all day long as long as it's tuned properly. you would be better off with a super 60 or GT35 turbo and even they may be on the big side?

I'm at work now and can't find the address (it's a private website, not a forum) where a guy swapped a 2.3L turbo into a an old base model fox body mustang and all of the modifications he made to it just junkyarding. Not very technical as he basically learns by trial and error, but there's some good tips and tricks on the cheap in it. Towards the end before he abandoned the site, he was prepping a DOHC volvo head to swap on it and some other different stuff.

When I get home I'll try to remember to look up the bookmark.

It probably takes a while to spool but with 20psi 300hp is easily doable. Take it for a ride, you can feel a big difference between 120hp and 300hp.

That's a good idea. Also, check the oil, coolant, and plugs. Good maintenance goes a long way.
