Turbo 350, 1st and reverse gears only

Being new to the forum, but familiar with forum etiquette, I checked best I could to find this answer before asking my first ever question on this board. I have a '68 chevy pickup, 2WD, 327 engine, TH350 tranny. The other day I was getting on the interstate and accelerated hard to pass another vehicle. All of a sudden there was nothing except high RPM's. I was able to get to the shoulder without incident (surprising considering I-70 in central Missouri) and determined I only have first and reverse. I tried shifting through the gears and still no go. Previous to this I did have a slight drip of tranny fluid, but the fluid level seems to be OK on the dip stick. Also, it is clear and does not smell burned. Any ideas? Thanks!

Hi,
I think it would either be a broken sprag or clutch
pack, either way it needs to come out & taken
apart.

Since 1st and reverse gears work... I would check the detent cable if the trans has one. See if the cable is free to move in & out of the outer housing = not stickking in WOT position.

Check the vacuum source / hose at the modulator on the trans.

Then pop off the governor cover and check the plastic drive gear= they break.

Gov is under the round press on steel cover near back end of case side. Check for clearance to re-install the cover first. The cover comes off easy , goes back on with difficulty if there is little room to work with
