we just finished rebuilding the box from some old parts out of a few spare boxes, a new seal and shift kit.
first problem we had was when we drove it it would not go into 3rd gear. every thing else was fine.
so then we had another valve body (that was working fine when we pulled it out) so we swapped them over and it went worse........
it would take off in 3rd gear only, you can manually select 2nd and would only stay in 2nd.when you select 1st the car stops, like it is in park. reverse works fine????

you have a crossleak somewhere or a checkball missing or in the wrong location, or an internal assembly error with one or more clutch packs. or maybe even the valve body gaskets on wrong. I.E. the case gasket is at the valve body, and vise-versa.
did you flush out the cooler lines before installing the trans? you mention that you put it together from some old parts that you had, did you at least buy a paper and rubber kit to replace the lip seals in the drums?
what bushings were replaced?
what "shift kit" was installed and did you follow directions exactly?
as you can see from my answers and questions that you left a lot on the table of what could be the problem.

best of my knowledge, there are minor differences on the pumps. one type takes a roller bearing washer and the other takes a numbered selective washer for end play clearances.
also, there are different thickness pump gears.
there were different clutch counts in drums for the difference between the light duty (4 & 6 cylinder) and the heavier duty (v-8 or truck).
other than that, i cant think of anything except, that the 350 wasnt made by gm till 69.
i think 77 up had bearing instead of washers and be carefull some were air cooled and the pumps cant interchange from a non air cooled and they had a 250 that looked the same but used the band for 2nd gear instead of clutches
