turbo 400 check ball trouble

Help! We are having trouble with putting one of these back together....ours is a manual reverse shift pattern valve body for a turbo 400. I think in the 80's Our transmission guy put it back together and we ran it but it only had 1st, 2nd gear and a shaky reverse no 3rd??? if anyone can help with where the check balls go? Also there where two washers at the top? should they be there? It is going into a big block chevy about 780 HP on a Tuff truck that weighs about 5100 lbs and is on 44 inch tires. I don't know if you needed all that info but I am trying to be a helpful pit crew. My husband and I only have till Sept 27th to get this thing up and running. Thanks!

It's hard to say where they should go since it's not a stock build. With Reverse Manual Vbody & may have dual feed Mods etc.. Any way to get in touch with the guy who built it?
May find some info in these 2 links about TH400 building. Lots of Pics so it may take time to load.

From 1 of Jakeshoes posts>
It's the same checkball that ATSG considers "non-functional" right?

Here are the ones I install.

The one omitted is near the 2nd servo, 1 o'clock position, across the bolt hole from the other red X.

the check balls are not your problem.most hyp. and towing trannys have the balls out or use just one for rev..3rd gear and rev. work together.sounds like a lip seal was torn when installed or a broken pump ring. the tranny pumps it hardest in rev.best thing to do is take it apart and check all seals clearence in clutch paks.if to much might have blown out a lip seal.. hope this helps frank

If this valve body has been used.... perhaps there are some "witness marks" from the check ball if steel check ball was used.

Different companies build the valve body slightly different , some may use no check ball , others may use 1 or 2.

antiquehorse1:

You mention washers at the top.... where? at the top of what?

There was a B&M v-body years ago that used washers as spacers for the coasting band

ok.. that should be the B&M v-body... reverse shift pattern with engine braking.

the instructions I have indicate that 4 check balls are used.. 2 of these are 1/4 inch check balls and two(2) are 9/32 inch check ball.

The 9/32" check ball is located in a non stock location in the main case. I would need to take a photo of a t-400 case to illustrate the locations of the check balls.

There is a 9/32" check ball inside the v-body... I do not have a clear picture of the v-body channels

checkballs in V-body

We found the indication marks where there were two 9/32 balls ( 1 for reverse & one for drive ) and one in the center leading to the piston that one is a 1/4 inch ball between valve body and plate. We have found we left out a seal on the main spool currently taking apart old tranny to make sure, which had the valve body we are having trouble with in it before this new tranny. thanks, with out your help we would have never looked at the old tranny? duh? with out all your guys input we would have been scratching our heads for a while.

mayb this will help some if there is confusion for the B&M valve body reverse pattern check ball location in the main case.

I do not have a photo of the valve body toshow where B&M wants the 9/32 inch check ball located.

B&M tranny

Thanks, that helps a lot! It confirmed we had the check balls in the correct position so we are pretty sure that its the one seal missing in the tranny....my hubby said I had the sizes of the check balls mixed up....I can not thank you enough....Hopefully we get to putting her back together in the next day or so...My husband has a new respect for the computer now...thanks!
