Turbo 400 question for Crosley

Crosley , I have a question for you concerning a Turbo 400, a friend I do motor work for, brought me a trans and wanted me to go through it for him.
Now some 15-20 years ago I used to do a few turbo 350's,400's but I really just built racing glides.
I was going throught this trans for him and while I was doing this he brought another one which someone already tore down for him, cause we needed a sprag for the first one.
Well on the one in the box I found this plastic spacer that is located on the rear carrier assy and fits up into the carrier assy that the rear band goes around, it is about 1/4 inch thick and aprox 1/2 in wide.
Now just how important is this spacer or ring , the trans I tore down never had one. Would the trans operate without it, with no detrimental consequences? Reason being, I already got this mother together, then I see this.

it is a silencer ring. I leave them all out.

some folks think it is an oil dam to hold oil in the planet for lube.

I've never seen a problem related to leaving that part out
