Turbo 400 trans speedometer gear?
I have a Turbo 400 trans and would like to get the speedometer right. On the main shaft there is a steel gear.I need to change it from a 18 tooth to a 15 tooth. Can I change it with the trans in the car?
Here is a good speedometer gear web site.

Yes ... you can change it ... if you can get the tailhousing off ...

Some vehicles ( custom mostly ) are built so the tailhousing is difficult to remove. Mine is NOT ...

Just remove the driveshaft, and the raise the transmission enough to get the tailhousing clear of the crossmember ( or remove the crossmember ;) ) and remove the speedometer driven gear ... and the tailhousing should come right off ... :D

I have had the tail housing off before. So that will not be a problem. The problem,is the gear pressed on the shaft? If it is I will have to find a puller that is long enough to pull the gear.

the photo Deuce has posted is not indicative of a t-400 tranny.

The speed-O bullet on a t-400 is in the main case section, not the tail housing

You will need some type of a narrow puller to reach up inside the trans pull off the steel speed-O gear on the t-400 output shaft once the tail housing is off the trans.

I've built a U shaped puller with long legs in the past to pull off metal press on type of speed-O gears. Slip the U shaped around the back of the gear , then thread the puller down onto the output shaft .... the gear slides off. Some times a bit of heat from a propane torch helps the gear to pull off easier.

TRUE ... but I posted it to show the relationship of the two gears.

Thanks guys!
I will see if I can come up with a puller.
