Turbo 400 Transfer Case Question

I have been told that a turbo 400 4 x 4 transmission and one for a 2 wheel drive are the same and all you have to do to bolt the transfer case to the 2 wheel drive transmission is remove the tail shaft and bolt up the transfer case. Can anyone please tell me if this is true.

Not even close to the truth.
The 2 wheel drive transmission will have an output shaft MUCH longer than the 4 wheel drive, in fact there are three different lengths of output shafts for the 2WD trans, and they all need an extension housing to help support the output shaft, along with giving a place for the speedometer drive and driven gears to go.

The 4 wheel drive transmission will have NO provision for a speedometer to hook to it or even drive one, it will also have NO tailshaft housing as the output shaft should extend out of the rear of the main case by only 1 inch+ .

You can use the 2WD trans but you will need to completely disassemble it and the 4x4 trans and remove the short shaft from the 4x4 and install it in your 2WD. Your speedo is in your transfer case so will be no need to change anything there. Quite a lot of work, just build the one you have.

there are 3 different 'factory' length shafts that function for a 4x4 application where the t-case bolts to the tranny with an adapter.

The 2 wheel drive short shaft will function as a 2 WD shaft and early 205 4x4 tranfer case .

There is a shorter shaft that functions for a 208 and later model 205 4x4 applications.

There is a 203 4x4 transfer case shaft . As I recall the 203 T-case shaft is the shortest one.

You must use the correct shaft for the adapter & t-case you have for the vehicle
