Turn signals only when work when motor is running.

Since I hooked up a custom light in my passenger dash board and dome light on my ceiling on my 56 chevy the turn signals does not work when the ignition is on. The custom light wire is connected to my ignition switch and my dome light wire is connected to the headlight switch. Everything else works in the lighting department, headlights, parking lights, brake lights and flashers. At first I thought the turn signals were not working at all because I checked the fuses and the bulbs. But when I drove the car at night and stopped behind another car and turned on the turn signal, I could see the reflection of the blinkers working in the back of the other car. So the blinkers does work but only when the motor is running. Additionally, the dash light turn signals in my phantom II gauges were operational before I hooked up the lights I mentioned. I checked under the dash but I could not see any wiring disengaged or fried. I even checked for wires not grounded properly. Can anyone point me in the right direction to analyze the source of my problem. Thanks in advance.

Not sure about about a 56, or if yours has been rewired...... I may be wrong but..........I don't think the blinkers are supossed to work with the ing in the off position. Head lights, stop lights and Haz flashers should work all the time reguardless of the key position.

loose

Normally the turn signals are the only lights that are powered ignition ON.
I would guess that you have intermittent connection in the wire that feeds the turn signals. Replace the fuse just to rule that out. Also replace the flasher.
Electrically there is no difference between IGN. ON vs Engine RUN.
This assumes that the turn signals worked OK before the wiring adds.

Sorry I just re-read your post.

Assuming they worked before your modifications. you have moved, disconnected something.

Remove the bulb to your dome light, see if that fixes it.
Then unhook the wire to your pass custom light, from the ing switch, see if that fixes it.

If they still don't work, check your steering column connector, I've attached several diagrams that might help you out

dalyyico you need to read the post & not hijack someones post with your own . FYI this is a 56 chevy light question not a 64 impala horn question. dalyyico buy a factory manual for your car. also this makes it 3 post about your problem today. sorry to change your post dasyhard!
