type of gasket sealer to use

what type of gasket sealer to use when installing a thermosat housing,does color matter all i have is the red high heat sealer.

I just use the spray "High Tack" stuff from Permatex.

if you have gm motor use the fel-pro #35562T,you don't need sealer with this gasket.

If you use the fel-pro gasket and no sealer and it still leaks, you got a bad thermostat housing.

I use black RTV sealer from permatex. Seems to work better than the red or the blue that I used in the past. Although I took apart an engine that had been put together with brush on copper sealer.. that stuff was REALLY sealed up good. Better than any silicon stuff ive ever used.

It only takes one gorilla with a 1/2 ratchet one time to warp a thermostat housing. Another way to destroy one is cut the ridge on the flange with a sharp gasket removing tool or a putty knife. It's only aluminum. Torque to specs and no farther. On used housings, I check it with a straight edge and inspect the ridge. If either check fails, I toss them. Why? because I know I'm setting myself up for failure. RTV is just a band aid for a boo boo. It will work in some cases, but why not do it right the first time.

It it's not an "O" ringed housing it's easy to flat sand and make it useable.

Flat sand and loose the ridge that seals the gasket. RTV will seal it, but who want's RTV goo sticking out between the housing and the intake. I guess if it doesn't bother you go ahead and use it.

Thanks for all your input,i ended up using the permatex copper with a stock paper gasket looks good so far.
