Types of custom exterior door handles

I was watching a GEARZ show today where they installed a custom door handle on an old Cougar. It seemed like a fairly cool handle. It was basically a flush mount where you push in on the back with your thumb, this pops the front out and then you pull it to open the door. They just did the rough install(no paint work) so I could not really tell how good it would look.

I am thinking of shaving my door handles or doing something custom with the door handles on my 68 LeMans Convertible.

Anyone have any photos of, or links to, custom door handles they could post?

Sounds like a Lincoln MarkV handle.

I think it was the Mark that had handles like that----but very thin and chromed.

Custom Door Handles

Hi Joelk, I couldn't find any close up pics, But the 1969-72 Pontiac Grand Prix used the same basic type you are looking for. That is they had an area at the handle rear where you pushed with your thumb, & the front end of the handle popped out to pull for the door to open. They still need a lock cylinder, or remote locking system, but the handle itself is a fairly slim design that may be an easy application with MINIMAL body work. On the plus side they maybe even use the same locking mechanism, as some of those sized GM models used interchangeable door mechanicals. They are also chromed, if that is the look you're after.
Check out local salvage yards to get an idea of the size.
Hope that helps ! Rick

Thanks for the replies.

I was able to find photos of 73-79 Mark V and 69-72 Grand Prix door handles.

The ones on Gearz were a custom aftermarket product(I don't recall the brand), but the design of the Grand Prix handles is similar.

I would actually like to keep chrome on the car to a minimum. I could use chrome handles, but would probably prefer a painted handle.

They do not have to be of that particular design, just looking for some Cool handles.

Any other suggestions, photos/links?

I want to use flush mount door handles on my 63 Ranchero.
One day while driving across town I noticed a Focus ZX2 next to me.
It had a nice handle assy , something like I was thinking of.

I went to the local Pull and Save and removed the door handles electric solenoids, linkages and latches. $15 otd.
Next day I called the place up and asked how much for the recessed area in the door where the handles mounted. $5 a side was the quote, but you cant cut them out with anything that makes sparks.

I go back with my trusty hatchet, chisel and a hammer and in 10 minutes have removed a section of each door skin.

The girl at the cashiers desk asked you did you get them off,tin snips. yup tin snips I say.
She then tells me how she hates tin snips and I just ruined 2 doors that they could have sold.
I told her what the guy on the phone said, she rang them up for the $10, all the while mumbling about it. LOL

Anyway the moral of the story is look at a lot of the 80's and newer cars, there are many different types of door handles, you might see something you like and not have to pay a large sum of cash on.
