Ultra leather

I'm sure many of you have used this material and I wanted your opinions on this compared to real leather.
I'm asking this because I'm having a "new" Ford '32 coupe being built by Fast Lane speed and rod shop.{any ratings on them would be appreciated as well}
Thanks

Ultraleather is a brand name for a type of imitation leather fabric with a 100% polyurethane face. There are many different colors and grain patterns available. It also usually has a woven Rayon backing, but it can have other types of backings. It comes in a 54" wide roll, just like vinyl, and usually is rated as high or higher than vinyl as far as abrasion testing goes. It is also usually higher priced than vinyl, although recently the prices are more comparable with vinyl.

Now days there are many kinds and brands of these 100% polyurethane fabrics out there. It is nice to work with, and looks and feels good, but I have seen and heard a lot of unhappiness with how it wears, especially on a driver's seat.

It is not remotely in the same class as any real leather.

I have used leather and ultra leather in many interiors and i probably will never give the option between ultra leather and leather again to any of my customers. In the cars i used ultra leather in i didnt think it turned out as good as if i would have used leather. ultra leather is also really thin and shows everything under it. I think i would rather use a cheaper vinyl then ultra leather. I have heard the good and bad about both but there is no comparison leather is the only way to go but can up the price a bit.

Real leather is basically $60 to $75 a yard (13.5 sq. ft.)or more, compared to Ultraleather or high end Vinyl at maybe $35 a yard, so real leather is considerably more. It is more than worth it to use real leather on seats, but using real leather for a door panel or a headliner is a waste of money in my opinion.

dan i agree on using leather on the seats and vinyl in other places on most cars if you can get a good color match. Most of the high end cars that have a full leather interior deserve it because the owners have so much money in them by the time they get to their interior if they go the cheaper route it shows. I go through my supplier for ultra leather and i pay around $58 to $65 a yard depending on how much i get and maybe if i could find it cheaper i would fill differently about it cause i think that is high for what you get. I like to use rave vinyl a lot. It has a nice grain pattern and its affordable.

It's not hard to find vinyl or 100% polyurethane that matches leather color and grain any more. I have a supplier of 100% polyurethane fabric that is less than half of your Ultraleather price, but I am getting special pricing. As far as vinyl goes, Rave is very good, and so is Naugaleather, and Naugahyde's Naugasoft and Majestic. None of those is cheap either.

It's pretty tame here in the Interior forum. (due mostly to my prolific moderating skills, I'm sure) You can get your ears pinned back pretty good in other forums if you're not careful.
