Basically you want a cleaner that is effective on the material you're trying to remove, but that will not harm the tank of the cleaning unit or the material that is being cleaned. My tank is stainless steel, so I can use a variety of cleaners w/o harming it, strong acids being the exception.
Often a alkaline cleaner like Black Maxx diluted to the needed strength works well- but the metal being cleaned should not
be aluminum or magnesium, or painted.
