Uneve Brake pad wear on 2001 Malibu

I heard my brakes squealing the other day, so today I pulled the wheels and calipers to check it all out. When I pulled the driver side pads, the inside pad was slightly more worn than the outside pad, which I suppose is normal. When I pulled the passenger side pads, the inside pad was almost totally worn, while the outside pad looked brand new, it still had the grooves in it. I checked the caliper, it was not stuck and moved freely. Is there any reason that both inside pads wear more quickly than the outside? Or even that quick?

Oh , the pads and rotors were both installed 14,000 miles ago. They are Brembo smooth face rotors and Greenstuff Pads

BTW, I will be replacing the pads and turning the rotors hopefully this week.

The newer "N" cars usually wear out the inner pads first.

Once the calipers are removed, you will find that the pads are VERY tight in the caliper bracket.

You need to remove the pads, carefully remove the thin shims, then remove all the rust from under the shims.

Apply some high temp lube or anti seize to the bracket, then install the shim. Apply high temp silicone lube to the pad side of the shim (NOT anti-seize here)

Generously apply the high temp silicone lube to the slider pins while they are out as well.

Then you are ready to fit some new pads.

Very common issue. I use the sandblast cabinet to get the rust out from under the shim, but a flat file works just as well here too.

Awesome, thanks 19_Chevelle_69. I plan on painting my calipers and brackets when I do the brakes, so I will definately clean and lube everything up.

FYI, I will be doing them in silver, so they look brand new, and are easier to clean. Not in red or blue or green or any retarted color like that. If I had the time and equipment, I would polish and powercoat them clear, but I don't, so I am doing what I can. Give me a little credit, and respect another persons tastes. Just because you don't like it, you don't have to call ricer. I take this as a huge insult and would like an apology. Thank you.

Since when is a 2001 Chevy Malibu rice?

Sorry, I was just kidding. And yes, I've seen riced Malibus. You could call it "burger-ed" but I mostly use "ricer" or "beaner-mobille"

Ok cool, I didn't want to have to put you on my "list' . And sorry if I went to far, I just can't stand stuff like that.

Yes, I too have seen some "riced" Malibus, but luckily none of them live around me.

I do have one question though, what is this "beaner-mobille", never heard that one before?

Ok, back to the topic, my brakes. So ya'll are saying that the uneven wear is caused by dirt build up in the brackets, and not the caliper? Ok cool. Thanks guys, ya'll rock.

"beaner-mobile" a car or truck, mostly trucks, with deep dish wheels, Nike stripe/check on the back window, excessive pinstriping, body FX/ground kit, more than one 3rd brake light, has tejano music blaring from it, dingle berries and sometimes children falling out of windows/bed.


I replaced the brakes on my sisters 99 Chevy van and the pads were worn out different, like one side was almost gone while the other side(of the disk) had half left on it.

Actually, the uneven brake wear on the "N" chassis cars (ie. the inner pad wearing out before the outer pad) is a normal condition. Now, if the pads are SEIZED into the bracket, that is usually caused by rust building up under the shim on the bracket side.

I have yet to see a seized caliper piston, but we usually don't see many very high mileage cars at the dealer.

There have been quite a few times where the calipers creak or squeak when appying the brake, but that has turned out to be the piston contacting a small area in the bore of the caliper, but not a siezed piston. This is/was a common condition with all "N" body cars. Malibu, Grand Am, Alero.

Here's a couple shots of the pads.

The driver side are on the laft, and passenger side are on the right. The outside pads are, of course, on the outside, and inside on the inside.

I dont know, is that possible?

I would think the rotors would have to be turned either way.

I don't think I would be comfortable driving on them though.
