I have an old 69 Nova that was sitting around for a couple years (built it 10 yrs ago). I ordered some parts and upgrades so I could refresh it (gas tank, seats, etc etc) to get it back on the road. Now the problem:
I put the car on a lift and went through everything, tightening all the old bolts, checking lines, etc etc.
I got to the flywheel/torque converter, and tightened one of the bolts that were within reach, moved maybe 1/8th of a turn. (I started and moved the car a dozen times before this, within the week)
Then, out of nowhere, when I tried to start the car to get it off the lift, I turned the key and the starter made the horrible noise of it turning but the engine not turning...
SO I thought I lost the old starter. Took it off, took it to the parts store, it passed the test, still got a new one, put it on, and NOW sometimes it has the right spacing and grabs and starts, some times it misses and just grinds metal off the teeth...
Long story short: somehow I "warped" the flywheel, making it out of round, and now the starter is 'sometimes' aligned correctly, and sometimes not - I can't get the gap perfect to 'always' work...
I'm looking for some Seasoned advice here... the car was starting just fine before, when (I believe) I tightened that one bolt on the flywheel/converter... Could that really have warped that old flywheel?
Engine specs: 350 block, Eagle 383 stroker kit w/ steel flywheel. TH350 auto trans.
If that's the case, I want to get a new, good, aftermarket, high-torque starter, instead of the parts-store junk (that doesn't align to the bolt holes good enough for my preference) - which one should I get?!
