After seeing your comment, I went back and looked at the pic again. I'm not sure he's weakened the roof significantly. The top of the coffer, now acting as a bottom chord of the truss, extends to the top chords all the way across the span. If he were to have designed the coffer into the original trusses, they wouldn't look that different. The load is now being carried through the new bottom chord, and the original ceiling is now acting like a soffit, with the only weight on it being itself and the sheetrock. Just my opinion.
